Fontana Family Lake Kayak Adventure

Location:  Bryson City, NC, United States
Starting From: US $55.00

Our adventure begins on the banks of Lake Fontana near Bryson City in Western North Carolina. You'll review basic kayaking techniques and safety instructions before departing. Once everyone is familiar with the kayaks and equipment, we'll embark on an excursion into the watery side of the Great Smoky Mountains. Along the way, exercise your imagination with tantalizing tales of Appalachian folklore, the creation of the Fontana Dam and Lake Fontana, and the struggles and triumphs of Native Americans and early American pioneers who learned to survive in the wilds of the Appalachian mountains. Learn about the rise and fall of the Cherokee Indians, listen for the songs of Scottish-Irish farmers cultivating apple trees and ginseng in their fields, imagine entire villages leaving there homes, heritage, and hearts behind "for the permanent enjoyment of the people", and savor the tasty tale of fishing the Fontana -- from the fly rod to your plate.

Tracing the path of the Tuckaseegee river, deep below us, we'll glide along the northern border of the Nantahala National Forest in search of a wide variety of birds, mammals, and species that frequent Fontana in search of sustenance. Animals you may encounter include Bald Eagles, River Otter, Black Bears, Whitetail Deer, Red tail Hawks, Kingfishers, and Coyotes.
