Our adventure begins on the banks of Lake Fontana near Bryson City in Western North Carolina before nightfall. You'll review basic kayaking techniques and safety instructions before departing. Once everyone is familiar with the kayaks and equipment, we'll embark on an excursion into the watery side of the Great Smoky Mountains.
As the sun falls below the crest of the surrounding peaks, be prepared to exercise your imagination with tantalizing tales of Appalachian folklore, legends of mythical creatures lurking deep in the wilderness, and stories of murder, mayhem, and souls that never rest. The Smokys are filled with the legends of Native American heroes, mysterious tales of things that go bump in the night, local myths and old wives' tales. Some are mysterious, others frightening, but all are entertaining.
Among the oldest mountains in the world, the Smokys provide a refuge for more than 100,000 species of plants, animals, and insects. Many of these animals are nocturnal, sleeping by day and prowling by night. Just after the sun dips below the horizon, many of these animals roll out of their dens and head out on a nocturnal journey in search of sustenance along FontanaÂs shore. Keep an eye out for Appalachian wildlife such as black bear, cottontail rabbits, flying squirrels, red fox, and many others through out the journey.
